For those of you not familiar with the organization, YEP (Young Emporia Professionals) was created to foster community awareness and networking, targeting those between the ages of 21 to 45. The goal is to get the younger portion of the working population in Emporia educated and involved in the community. Our mission is to promote and offer innovative ways for young professionals to expand their professional horizons by addressing the unique challenges that younger individuals face in forming career and social connections in the Emporia Area. As a long-term goal, we want employers and the community in general to utilize the group as a way to introduce prospective, new, and current employees and residents to Emporia. The objectives of YEP are to create and cultivate our future leaders, provide education and professional development opportunities, providing understanding of the community while working to keep our young professionals in Emporia, creating networking opportunities, providing an outlet for volunteer information and opportunities and building awareness of governmental processes and issues.
For example, YEP assisted Mary Shivley at Emporia State University with the Leadership program in February of 2008. A number of YEP members volunteered to be on a panel discussing and fielding questions from the Leadership class on various aspects of the “real world” for someone just out of college. Other YEP Educational presentations from 2008 were Melissa Windsor from the Emporia Arts Council, Doug Ford with the Granada Theatre, ESU Basketball Coach's and Blake Davis from the Emporia State University Foundation. Social events from 2008 included bowling at Flinthills Lanes, 9 holes of golf at the Emporia Country Club, drinks at Town Royal and a Thanksgiving feast.
YEP Educational and Social events are held each month. For dates, times and locations watch your email for an Evite if you are already a YEP member and for non YEP members look for the YEP article with event listings in the monthly Chamber newsletter, or check out YEP's Facebook page.
