Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Diagnostic Clinic of Kansas Celebrates 25 Years of Service on National Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day

Emporia, KS — The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Diagnostic Clinic of Kansas, located in Emporia KS, is proud to celebrate its 25th anniversary on September 9, coinciding with National Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day, a nationwide observance dedicated to preventing the most preventable birth defect: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

Founded in 2001 under the direction of Dr. Jim Barnett, the clinic has spent a quarter century providing comprehensive diagnostic services, family support, professional training, and statewide advocacy. Over the years, the clinic has become a trusted resource for families, educators, healthcare providers, and community partners seeking clarity, compassion, and evidence-based guidance.

A community celebration will be held on September 9th, 2026, at 9:00 am at the Trusler Business Center/Chamber Meeting Room, 719 Commercial, Emporia. Community members and advocates are encouraged to attend to help us celebrate and learn more about what our clinic team can do for you.

“This milestone reflects thousands of hours of dedication by the volunteer multi-disciplinary team, hundreds of families served, and a statewide commitment to healthier futures,” relayed Beverly Long, Family Advocate for the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Diagnostic Team. “FASD is 100% preventable; education and awareness are our strongest tools. Empowering families, caregivers, educators, and agencies to meet the needs of individuals that have been affected by FASD is a major focus of the clinic, but is not limited to just the diagnosis, but also prevention and advocacy.”

A Legacy of Impact

For 25 years, the clinic has worked to:

· Provide accurate, multidisciplinary FASD diagnosis

· Support families navigating complex developmental needs

· Train educators, medical professionals, and community organizations

· Advocate for prevention through public education and outreach

A Call to Action

National Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day serves as a reminder that no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy. The clinic encourages Kansans to join in spreading awareness, supporting prevention efforts, and ensuring every child has the healthiest possible start.

“While FASD can create lifelong challenges, early intervention and consistent supports can make a difference.” said Kayla Scott, current team leader of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Diagnostic Team. “Children grow and adapt when given the right tools, and families feel more hopeful when they understand the ‘why’ behind the challenges.”
