Emporia, along with Dynamic Discs, will once again host the PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships. Approximately 300 players ages 8 – 18, along with their families, are expected at the event July 4 – 10. Emporia hosted the Junior Worlds in 2018 and 2019 and was on track to host the 2020 event until it was cancelled by PDGA due to COVID-19.
The week will kick off Sunday, July 4, with a Divisional Doubles Championship at Peter Pan Park. Field events including EDGE Skillshot, putting, long drive, and mini golf will take place at Emporia Middle School on Monday, July 5. Tuesday, July 6, will be player check-in, opening ceremony and the player meeting at the Granada Theatre. Tournament play begins Wednesday, July 7, at Jones Park East, Jones Park West, Peter Pan Park, and Soden’s Grove Park.
There are several evening community activities planned for the players including a Kids Design Discs Contest at the Emporia Arts Center, Junior Worlds Night at Emporia Family Fun Center, Indoor Mini Disc Golf at Bourbon Cowboy, Junior Worlds Night at the David Traylor Zoo, and Junior Worlds Skate Night at Rollers. Friday, July 9, will be the Junior Worlds Block Party hosted by Emporia Main Street and Fly Mart, which will take place in the 900 block of Commercial Street from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
On Saturday, July 10, the semi-final rounds will take place at Jones Park East, Jones Park West, Peter Pan Park, and Soden’s Grove Park. Tee times start at noon for the finals at the Emporia Country Club, with the awards ceremony following.
